Whether working outdoors or indoors, heat exposure is a factor you can't ignore. Here are the top tips from OSHA's guide:

  1. Ease into the heat. Follow the 20% Rule: work only 20% of your shift at full intensity on day one. Increase gradually.

  2. Hydrate often. Drink 1 cup of cool water every 20 minutes — even if you're not thirsty.

  3. Take frequent rest breaks in shade or a cool area to recover.

  4. Dress for protection. Wear light-colored, loose-fitting, breathable clothes — and a hat!

  5. Watch for signs of heat illness. Symptoms include dizziness, nausea, confusion or dry/hot skin. Take action fast.

  6. Know the emergency steps: Call 911, cool the person immediately and stay with them until help arrives.
